Going freshwater fishing?  Some fish are regulated by size or season or completely prohibited.
Some Species or locations have specific seasons.
Size requirements are measured from the tip of the lower jaw to the tip of the tail.

Bass 

Largemouth Bass -Micropterus salmoides

a.k.a. Black Bass

 
Description - Has a very large mouth with the upper jaw extending behind the eyes. A silver to silver-green color with freckled black markings on lower side with white belly.
Habitat - Found in every state in North America usually in less than 20 feet of water.
Tackle - Rubber worms or combination lures with spinners and tassels
Size - Average length is up to 40 inches.

 

Smallmouth Bass - Micropterus dolomieu

 
Description - Brown-gold to camouflage green  in color with dark brown spots often showing up as bars going down the sides. Upper jaw stops before the eye. Eye is reddish in color.
Habitat - Found in lakes with gravel, boulders and rock beds in North America. Warm waters of 60 to 80 degrees.
Size - Average weight is 3 - 8 pounds.

Trout

 

Rainbow Trout - Oncorhynchus mykiss

 
Description - A green to yellowish color with blotches of red. Small black spots on fins and back.
Habitat - Found near the surface in the waters of North America, Alaska to the Aleutian Islands.
Size - Weight varies depending upon location but can be found up to 40 pounds and up to 45 inches.

 

 

Brook Trout - Salvelinus fontinalis

 
Description - Dark green to black on top with light green wavy lines or blotches on back and dorsal fin. Pink or red spots with a blue outline. Black lines on caudal fin.
Habitat - Found in small or medium sized lakes or rivers with cool waters between the temperatures of 55 and 60 degrees. 
Tackle - #12 hook with maggot bait or dry deer fly
Size - 25 to 27 inches weighing up to 5 pounds.

 

Bull Trout - Sa
lvelinus confluentus
a.k.a. Arctic Char

 
Description - Black over Silver on top and light belly  with white spots on the sides, dark fins.
Habitat - Found in cold, fast moving waters
Tackle -  Check regulations on acceptable types (restricted) these fish will stike most anything from a spoon to a tree leaf.
Size - Average 2 - 8 pounds

 

Brown Trout - Salmo trutta

 
Description - Silver on top and Golden belly  with brown or black spots on the sides, back and fins. Spots usually have a lighter color around them.
Habitat - Found in waters between 50 and 65 degrees in acidic waters.
Size - Average 10 - 30 pounds

 

Lake Trout -Salvelinus namaycush

 
Description - Dark silvery green or gray with white to yellow spots. A deeply forked caudal fin.
Habitat - Found in very deep waters unless the waters become too cold. At that time they may migrate to shallower warmer waters. They are found in Canada and Alaska to New England and the Great Lakes. Ussually found in the northern hemisphere.
Size - Average weight is 20 - 40 pounds.

 

 

Dolly Varden - Salvelinus malma
a.k.a. Bull trout

 
Description - Bright orange or red spots on the sides. Has small scales.
Habitat - Found from northern California to Alaska  and the northern regions of Canada. Also found in Korea and Japan.
Size - Average 20 - 25 inches.

 

Salmon

Chum Salmon - Oncorhynchus keta

 
Description - Black or dark olive above with dark streaks on body.
Habitat - Found in coastal streams from California to Alaska and Korea and Japan
Size - Average 8 - 15 pounds.

 

Sockeye Salmon - Oncorhynchus nerka

 

Mature


Young
Description -  Young Sockeye are Metallic blue-green over silver with small black specks. Mature spawning sockeye have a pronounce hook on upper lip are predominantly red . Spawning sockeye  may be 3 or 4 deep in a spawning river causing it to appear as blood red. Mature are most frequently caught in salt water. See salmon Spearing /gigging
Habitat - Found in rivers in the United States, Korea and Japan.
Tackle - Young will strike dry flies and spoons. Mature spawning may strike a fly out of instinct but normally do not feed when spawning.
Size - Average weight is 5 - 7 pounds.

 

Silver Salmon - Oncorhynchus kisutch

 
Description - Metallic blue above and silver below with black spots. White gumline at base of mouth. Upper lip becomes more pronounced with age.
Habitat - Found in Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes in North America.
Size - Average weight is 6 - 12 pounds.

 

 

King Salmon - Oncorhynchus tshawytscha

 
Description - Small male often dusky yellow, larger male blotchy and dull red on the side. They have irregular spots on the back and fins. Black gums at the base of mouth. Older ones have a more pronounced upper lip.
Habitat - Large rivers, Pacific and Great Lakes in ocean and coastal streams.
Size - Average weight is 15 - 20 pounds.

Pike

 

Northern Pike - Esox lucius

 
Description - Dark green to light green with a lighter shade to white on bottom. Long body with large head. The jaws have large sharp teeth. The roof of mouth has small teeth that point backwards.
Habitat - Found in North America from New York and the Great Lakes to Nebraska but are also found in the south and western states of North America.
Size - Average weight is 15 - 20 pounds.

Muskie

Muskie - 

 
Description - Dark green to light brownish green, lighter  on belly. Long body with streamlined head. Differs from the Pike in that it has vertical bands on it's sides.
Habitat - Found primarily in the lakes of eastern US and Canada. Ontario is famous for it's Muskie fishing.
Size - Average weight is 12 - 20 pounds.

Miscellaneous 

 

Grayling -Thymallus arcticus

 
Description - Rows of red to green spots with large  spots on dorsal fin. Has black spots behind its head. Pointed snout and a prominently forked caudal fin.
Habitat - Open water of medium sized rivers and lakes. Can  be found in Alaska and northern Canada and the Artic and Pacific drainages .
Size - Average 20 - 25 inches.

 

Sheefish - Stenodus leucichthys

 
Description - Green blue or brown above blending to a light silver or white on sides and bottom. Large wide mouth that extends behind the eyes.
Habitat - Found In North American lakes and rivers.
Size - Average weight is 30 - 55 pounds.
