Hiking
Hiking is different from
Backpacking in that Hiking is a
bit more casual and backpacking is usually what long endurance trips
are referred to, such as greater than 3 days in the wilds.
Some photos from a South
Florida hike - Place your mouse on the thumbnail for a brief
description and click on each on for a larger photo.
If you do not have a sport of choice then
consider hiking. Hiking is not speed walking or jogging, but it is a demanding
and rewarding way to get into nature and get some exercise at the same
time. While on the trail you will see facets of nature most other people
never get to see. Issues that plagued you seem to come into perspective
when weighed against the enormity of nature. Call it "mobile
meditation" or whatever, but you will return from a hike more relaxed,
tired but more relaxed. Some hikes have destination but on others the hike is the
reward. Visit our Hiking
tips page so that you will have the knowledge that you need to have a
pleasant hike. Be sure to print our hiking
checklist (Different from our Hiking tips)
and use it to prepare for any hike.

Top locations:
In the USA:
The
Appalachian National Scenic Trail The granddaddy of them all in
the USA. It runs through several states and has many entry and exit points along
the way. Do it all or just a part of it.
Pacific
Crest Trail Runs from the US/Mexico border to the Canadian border.
This trail passes through, over or along side some of the best that the
western mountain ranges have to offer. A large portion of it runs
through the Yosemite National Park, perhaps the most visited of all
parks, so you know this trail will be rewarding.
East
Coast Greenway - A 2600 mile Cyclist
and hiking trail from Maine to
Key
West, that is being compiled by the East
Coast Greenway Alliance. The first ever cyclist trip of the entire
route was completed early Nov 2004. Because much of the trail run
through urban area it has to share it with some automotive traffic,
but where necessary ,to do so routes with the least amount of traffic
are designated as part of the greenway. For a short bio on the group
that completed the trip click
here. (note you may be asked if you want to update a Vector
Rendering plug-in, we did and it seemed to be safe). You will be
amazed at the diversity of the participant and special kudos to Anne
Kruimer who used a modified semi-recumbent tandem hand operated bike.
Anne was injured and lost the use of her legs in 1992 but she hasn't
let that stop her.
Everglades
National Park In South Florida has many trails all through it. Some are
maintained while other are game trails. Best if visited during the winter months
or the dry season.
Ichetucknee
Springs State Park Florida -A great place to observe nature in North Florida and
then cool off by tubing in the spring when you are done.
Yellowstone
National Park Miles and Miles of scenic trail abounding with wildlife.
Yosemite
National Park - California -Perhaps the most popular of all
the national parks with over 800 miles of trails
Big
Bend National Park -Texas - Is a hiker’s paradise. More than 150
miles of trails offer opportunities for day hikes or backpacking
trips. Great for camping.
For
additional hiking spots be sure to check out the USA
NPS Parks and attractions and the National
Wildlife Refuge System.
We have an intense tutorial in our Survival
trips section on "How
to Make A Fire" it is worthwhile
reading as it may save your life and if nothing else it is fun trying
to emulate what is taught in this section.

Alabama: There are several places that provide an exciting
backpacking excursion in Alabama such as Little
River Canyon Preserve situated atop Lookout Mountain. With almost
20 miles of trails and one of the deepest canyons east of the Mississippi,
Little River Canyon is an exciting place for a day of backpacking. In the
gulfcoast region there is the Bon
Secour National Wildlife Refuge where the land is flatter
and the birds and scenery differs greatly from the inland sites. Alabama's
location at the southern end of the Appalachian Mountain chain gives visitors
the unique chance to hike in some of the most diverse and beautiful woodlands in
the South. Tall pines line over 30 miles of trails at Lake
Guntersville State Park where a lucky visitor may see the American Bald
Eagle as it makes its winter home. Cheaha
State Park, Alabama's highest point, offers a variety of hiking and mountain
bike trails while Tuskegee
National Forest in South Alabama is equipped with fishing ponds and wildlife
viewing areas on many of its trails.
Extended or multi-day hikes require some additional planning. Some of
the areas you plan to pass thru may be in national parks. If so then you
will need a wilderness permit available from the National
Park Service. Also you will need provisions and will have to make
arrangement to have a cache in place for you at pre-appointed locations. Contact
the hiking clubs or other grass roots organization that are located in the areas
you will be passing through to see if the have any such service. A search of the
web produced these results on hiking
clubs.

The more you get to do a sport the more you will enjoy it.
We have found that being prepared to leave at a moment notice
will increase the number of time that you will actually get out
and do it. Ultimately the best way to be prepared is to have all
the necessary gear already stored in a "gear trailer".
This is a trailer dedicated to this purpose. READ
ON.
Be cautious when in the wilds as Ticks
and Chiggers can pose a serious problem.
