Appalachian National Scenic Trail:

This is for the people who would like to do some hiking; the amount of hiking is up to you. The entire trail is 2,174 miles long. and enjoys some of the greatest vistas to be found anywhere. The trail runs mainly in hill or mountain country and will give you an exceptional amount of exercise. However because there is so much to discover you will enjoy the effort. See our hiking checklist.

Nothing says that you must hike the entire length of the trail, although some people do. There are many points where you can get on or off and many hiking clubs and volunteers along the way to offer you assistance. Some of the Trailheads have parking which enables you to hike in for a period of time and then return the same way, or to exit further along the trail and then arrange for transportation back to you vehicle. With the use of cell phones many people call, when they are nearing an exit point of their choosing, to have someone pick them up. Cell phones may not work in all locations. Direct access by bus is also available to several points along the trail, mostly in the mid-Atlantic and New England states, as well as train service at two points on the A.T.: Harpers Ferry, WV (60 miles northwest of Washington, DC) and near Pawling, New York (80 miles north of New York City).

Because of the length of the trail, it is within reach of most persons in the Eastern United States. It runs through or into the following states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia.

The trail is maintained by the National Parks Service and  more than 4,000 volunteers who contribute in excess of 185,000 hours each year.
