Everglades National Park - River of grass A diverse vegetative environment, both temperate and tropical plant communities, including sawgrass prairies, mangrove and cypress swamps, pinelands, and hardwood hammocks, as well as marine and estuarine environments. Great portions of the park are under water during the rainy season and create the unique conditions for some of the most remarkable wildlife anywhere in the world. The park is known for its rich bird life, particularly large wading birds, such as the roseate spoonbill, wood stork, great blue heron and a variety of egrets. Those that want to see an alligator will find them along the banks of ditches and lakeshores basking in the sun. The rare and endangered Florida panther ( a cousin of the cougar or mountain lion) makes its home in the Everglades and is in danger of extinction due to inbreeding and reduction in habitat as Florida is developed to accommodate those that want to escape the harsh winters up North. The Everglades is not just a watershed for the southern part of Florida but serves to recharge the well fields for the communities on its fringe. The Everglades can be reached a a day trip from Ft Myers, Naples, Marco, Everglades City, Miami, Ft Lauderdale, or Okeechobee A neat place to visit but bring your bug repellant.
